Mind and Choice in Economics1

چکیده
This paper holds that the criteria of rational behavior, so far assumed in behavioral models, are not sufficiently realistic. The point of view here presented lies upon contemporary neurobiology that teaches how individual behavior responds to more complex and efficient criteria than the ones so far utilized in the decision making models. Following Simon's and Hayek's intuitions, the paper takes the view that knowledge is the fruit of a process of "endogenous construction" and that perception represents the source of the unpredictability of behavior, and the cornerstone of economic change. A relevant part of contemporary neurobiology has later confirmed these intuitions, and it can probably help us understand the role of emotions in the processes of choice. The development of this approach may have an influence on economic theory, especially with reference to economic behavior, theory of games, procedural rationality models, and pathdependent processes. M ainstream economists—Neoclassicals, in the narrow sense—have from time to time remarked on Israel Kirzner’s theory of entrepreneurship. They have maintained that Kirzner says things that do not fit into normal economic theory, that conflict with normal theory, that are too speculative to entertain, and that contradict other things he says. Their criticisms tell us why Kirzner is rebuffed by t...

متن کاملProbability , Common Sense , and Realism : a Reply to Hülsmann and Block
In my critique of Austrian economics1 (Caplan 1999), I carved out a virtually unique position: Despite the Austrians’ professed devotion to “realism” against neoclassical pragmatism, the latter approach is in fact far more realistic than the former. My critics (Hülsmann 1999, Block 1999) remain unconvinced. The editor’s invitation to respond provides me with an ideal opportunity not only to def...
متن کاملUnexpected benefits of deciding by mind wandering
The mind wanders, even when people are attempting to make complex decisions. We suggest that mind wandering-allowing one's thoughts to wander until the "correct" choice comes to mind-can positively impact people's feelings about their decisions. We compare post-choice satisfaction from choices made by mind wandering to reason-based choices and randomly assigned outcomes. Participants chose a po...
متن کاملMotor Effort Alters Changes of Mind in Sensorimotor Decision Making
After committing to an action, a decision-maker can change their mind to revise the action. Such changes of mind can even occur when the stream of information that led to the action is curtailed at movement onset. This is explained by the time delays in sensory processing and motor planning which lead to a component at the end of the sensory stream that can only be processed after initiation. S...
